The Invention of Lying is Ricky's first movie as writer, director and star. He wrote and directed the film together with Matt Robinson.

The Invention of Lying is set in a world similar to our own, but where the ability to lie never evolved. Ricky plays a loser, Mark Bellison, who realises he is the first man ever to be able to create untruths.

This, he discovers, gives him something of an advantage over his fellow man. But how will he deal with the awesome power of this unique faculty?

The film stars Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Louis C.K., Tina Fey and Jonah Hill with Jason Bateman, Christopher Guest, Jeffrey Tambor and John Hodgman.

The Invention of Lying is released in cinemas across the UK and US on 2 October 2009
